What activities can and can't I do after LASIK surgery?
Immediately after the operation

Don't touch or rub your eyes.
Rest for a few hours in your home, take an afternoon nap, listen to music with your eyes half closed......
Apply lubricant, and hydrating eye drops that will be prescribed to you.

24 hours after the operation

Take a shower or even better a bath.
Avoid getting soap or tap water in your eyes
You can read or watch TV.
You can return to work. Keep your eyes hydrated with artificial tears.
You can take a plane, but remember to lubricate you eyes with the recommended eye drops as cabin air is very dry.

48 hours after the operation

You can now take a bath and wear makeup on your face, but not on your eyelids.

After 3 days

You can begin to do exercise and sports that do not affect your eyes, like cycling, jogging or gymnastics.
You can play with young children but be careful that they don't touch your eyes.

After 3 weeks

Racket games can be played but it is best to wear eye protection, swimming is permitted with goggles.
Also diving, sailing, mountain biking and football are ok, you can ski but you should wear a mask.

After 3 months

It is possible to practice more violent sports such as martial arts, waterskiing and other water sports.

Is it possible to drive directly after a LASIK operation?
It is best not to drive on the first day. It is possible to drive short distances the following day if your assessment confirms that your vision is ok.

What are the long-term results of laser surgery?
It is a proven technique. The idea of cutting down the cornea has existed for 30 years, the Excimer laser has been used for more than 20 years and more than 17million patients have been operated on in the world to this day. We can today confirm that there is no long term worry with regards to safety following this operation. This is mainly thanks to all the recent evolution in laser technology as well as the refinement of the preoperative examinations.

What is the worst possible thing that can happen after laser eye surgery?
The operation is safe, but like all surgery there are risks. However, the skilled, experienced ophthalmologists who conduct the surgery are there to correct any complications that may arise during or after the operation.

All these questions will be answered during the first assessment. An appraisal will be carried out to assess all the different surgical options, the techniques used, the benefits as well as the risks and potential complications.
The goal of refractive surgery or eye laser surgery is to reduce a patient's dependence on glasses or contact lenses, to give a better quality of vision and to hopefully improve the general quality of life.
Such newfound vision lets you rediscover outdoor activities be it sporting or professional. It is the freedom to wake up and see or drive without the need for glasses. This first visit also provides the chance to see whether or not you meet all the criteria to undergo and benefit from refractive surgery.

Age
You must be more than 20 yrs old. The necessary characteristics are rarely evident between 18 and 20. Vision must be stable in particular for myopia. Between the ages of 20 and 25 it is preferable that the myopia has not declined or changed in the last 18 months. After 25, one year of stability is normally adequate.
Whether or not you are eligible for surgery will be determined at the end of the first assessment once you have undertaken both visual and corneal examinations.

Contraindications
Pathological corneas, inflammation of the eye, ocular dryness, certain illnesses (unstable diabetes, inflammatory rheumatism) are contraindications and mean that you will not be eligible for surgery.
Pregnancy is also a temporary contraindication for this surgery.

Initial consultation

To examine your cornea, several techniques are used.
Eye drops will be placed onto your pupil to dilate them.
This can lead to blurred vision and light sensitivity for some hours after, it is therefore not recommended to drive straight after the initial exam.
We advise you to bring a pair of sunglasses with you to wear after the exam to soften these reactions.

Important information for those who wear contact lenses.
It is essential that you don't wear your contact lenses in the days leading to your first assessment.
Contact lenses can altar the state of the surface of the cornea and therefore lead to inaccurate measurements being taken of your eye : These inaccuracies can then affect the outcome of you surgery. It is therefore important to allow the cornea to effect its natural form before the initial assessment.
The amount of time needed without lenses varies from person to person; it is longer for those who wear rigid lenses compared with those who wear flexible ones.
It is also influenced by the number of years that you have been wearing lenses.

Estimated time needed without lenses before your first assessment.

In the case of flexible lenses : 1week.
In the case of rigid lenses worn for 10 years : 4 weeks.
In the case of rigid lenses worn for more than 10 years : 6 to 8 weeks.

After this assessment is complete and reviewed, the date of the operation is confirmed.
